The Tigers pulled out a gritty, exciting win Friday night and beat Minnestoa 4-3. Richard Bachman had 4 HUUUGE dramatic saves in the last 1:30 to seal the win. Mike Testwuide's backhander won in for the Tigers. CC blew leads of 2-0 and 3-1 yet showed some grit in one of the more exciting games of the season. The Tigers now have 29 points in the tight WCHA race. I'll update the standings above on Sunday. The announcers were two of the stupidest I have ever heard on TV. I'm fine with getting the feed from hometown announcers but c'com! These guys are terrible! BUT, game was awesome, pics will be up tomorrow!

Plenty of reading about the game tonight and the battle for the Gold Pan. The Denver Post has a pretty good article so that's my post de jour today. I'm stoked because the game is on TV on FSN tonight at World Arena and I've never watched a game on regional TV at our home arena. The other great thing is that those of us displaced from being able to go, get to watch. I've got my own hockey game right before but I'll be headed to the nearest TV after. GOO TIGERS!!!

And here's something interesting, my banner on the blog for the Tigers back-to-back Gold Pan wins made it onto the DU(d) blog back in October and I just realized it now. Funny, you would think all of those smart, educated folks that brag about going to that school would be able to come up with their own content! DU, CC Playing High Stakes Game
The coveted Gold Pan is up for grabs as is a chance for Pioneers to grab league lead.

In a one-and-done, playoff-feel format, the Denver Pioneers and Colorado College Tigers will tonight butt heads and the rest of their bodies in a single-game weekend at the Colorado Springs World Arena. The rivals will again go against the college hockey grain March 7 at Magness Arena to conclude the regular season.

Putting aside the excitement and momentum swings of the traditional consecutive-night, home-and-home series was not caused by a venue conflict. Rather, when the schedule was originally released, both programs had this weekend off, and they collaborated to avoid having a bye during the final six-game stretch.

So wardrobe and location changes won't be needed after tonight's 270th meeting between the Front Range and Western Collegiate Hockey Association rivals. But much will be at stake, beginning with the coveted Gold Pan.

If DU loses or ties tonight, CC retains the traveling trophy for the 10th time in 16 years. The Tigers tied (2-2) and beat (3-2) the Pioneers in a home-and-home set Oct. 31-Nov. 2 — a series defined by the sensational goaltending of CC sophomore Richard Bachman.

DU must find ways to beat Bachman tonight and March 7 to bring the trophy back to Denver. Bachman, from Highlands Ranch, stopped a combined 84-of-88 shots in his previous two games against the Pioneers, and was the primary reason DU went 1-of-19 on the power play.

"He's a great goaltender, no doubt about that, but you don't go into a series, or a game, focusing on the opponent or one player," said DU junior center Tyler Ruegsegger, who grew up playing with Bachman in the Littleton Hockey Association. "We just have to put pucks on net, crash the net, and shoot to score."

The DU-CC rivalry has an order of importance. It begins with the Gold Pan, continues with the WCHA standings, and finishes with the NCAA Tournament.

For the latter two, the Pioneers are in better shape.

DU is contending for its 13th MacNaughton Cup, and third this decade, and can pull ahead of idle Wisconsin for first place by itself in the league standings with a win or tie tonight. The Badgers host the Pioneers for a two-game series next weekend that concludes DU's five-game road stretch, including the final three on Olympic-size ice sheets.

"The standings are huge right now; we're tied with Wisconsin, and every point is necessary — and it doesn't matter what ice surface we play on," DU goalie Marc Cheverie said. "We just know we have to win."

CC, the defending MacNaughton Cup champion, is fourth in the WCHA, four points behind DU and UW.

In the national picture, the Pioneers are tied with Cornell for sixth in the all-important Pairwise Rankings and in good position to make the 16-team NCAA Tournament without winning the WCHA playoff tournament. The Tigers are 19th in the Pairwise — about six spots on the negative side of the at-large-berth bubble.

"We've been good some nights, bad other nights. Very inconsistent," CC coach Scott Owens said. "Who knows what's going to happen with us, but we know they're a good team and, with a win or tie (tonight), we retain Gold Pan, which is a big deal. There is a lot at stake for us."

Notes: DU was already short-handed with injuries to center Tyler Bozak (knee) and defenseman Chris Nutini (upper-body injury), but will now be forced to play without puck-moving defenseman Patrick Mullen, a senior who was issued a one-game suspension Thursday for his slashing major and game misconduct at the end of Saturday's game at Minnesota-Duluth. . . . The Tigers will be without the services of center Andreas Vlassopoulos (lower-body injury), defenseman Kris Fredheim (lower body) and backup goalie Drew O'Connell (shoulder). . . . CC is on a four-game unbeaten streak (3-0-1) against DU.

Three points was enough for the Tigers to make it back into one poll this week and nearly missing another. The Tigers played on the road with poor travel conditions and came out virtually unscathed. This weekend's tilt with the big dumb DU(d) is important both because it's a rivalry and CC is only 4 points out of first in the conference.

After a weekend off, Colorado College finds itself in the middle of a bunched-up Western Collegiate Hockey Association.

Only seven points separate first and eighth place. Minnesota-Duluth, Alaska-Anchorage and St. Cloud State split their respective series last weekend and Minnesota State-Mankato swept its series.

All four of those teams were behind CC in the standings. That means the top teams didn't separate themselves too much from the Tigers, who are five points behind front-running Denver. But it also puts more pressure on CC to maintain home-ice advantage in the WCHA playoffs.

CC is tied for fifth with Minnesota-Duluth and is only two points ahead of eighth-place St. Cloud State. The top five teams in the WCHA host the first round of the league's playoffs in March.

"I think what we're shooting for is home ice," coach Scott Owens said. "That's our goal."

The Tigers' status in Monday's USA Today/USA Hockey Magazine poll didn't change. CC didn't rank among the top 15 but is tops among others receiving votes. Air Force, which had a tie and loss last weekend at Mercyhurst, dropped out of the list of teams that received votes.

CC remained 20th in the U.S. College Hockey Online PairWise rankings, which mimics the NCAA Tournament selection committee's rankings.

The Tigers have a road series this weekend against last-place Michigan Tech, which is 1-14-5 in the WCHA. The Tigers could have center Nick Dineen, who suffered an upper body injury Jan. 24, back in the lineup.

Few DU tickets remain

Only 300 tickets remain for CC's Feb. 13 game against Denver at World Arena. CC is expecting a sellout. Tickets, which are $18, can be purchased at Ticketmaster, the World Arena box office or by calling 576-2626.

After a nice Christmas and New Years break I'm back at it and the site is looking better than ever thanks to the help I got with some bad code. Turns out the culprit was my "about Colorado Springs" block of text and some Microsoft Word code that was leftover from the links I made in that software. Go figure, two links copied over could override an entire webpage! But it's fixed and the site looks how it was supposed to when I re-launched it with the new name before the season started. Hope everyone had a great end of the year, I'm still getting used to seeing 10-20 foot piles of snow along the road everywhere I go, pretty strange to see so much snow!
Uncaged Notes from around the college hockey world

• The big news this week was the Pairwise Rankings made their USCHO debut on. CC starts out at 19th while Cornell (Cornell, really??!) starts at the top. Let the analyzing begin!

• There was a New Year's tournament in Denver called the Wells Fargo Cup Denver (15th annual apparently) won by BC after they stomped DU-didn't realize that Magness was capable of hosting a tournament ;). I completely missed the tournament, catch up and read about the final game here.

I've been pretty slacktastic with my postings on the site due to work so I decided to toss in a few links regarding the Minnesota game that will air Saturday and Sunday nights on FSN. No the Tigers don't play tonight, something I just found out myself as I was writing this. So on that note, here are some links to read while you suffer through a Friday night without hockey. As for myself, I have my first game in the Durango Adult Hockey league tonight so that should be fun. I played inline hockey in highschool and grew up on roller blades playing in our tiny driveway but never played on ice until a month ago. Should be a good time!

Chad Rau and his ancient stock photo made the front of USCHO today and the WCHA column gives the Tigers a C- for their report card at this point and addresses the fact that we all are wondering how the Tigers have remained so high in the polls.

A pair of former No. 1-ranked teams square off this Saturday and Sunday when Colorado College and the University of Minnesota meet in a regional televised two-game series at Mariucci Arena on the UM campus in Minneapolis.

Only one point separates the second-place Gophers and fourth-place Tigers in the unusually tight WCHA standings. While league-leading Wisconsin takes the weekend off, CC and Minnesota are among five teams with a shot at catching or surpassing the Badgers in the WCHA standings.

This is the last weekend of conference play until January.

Still in the thick of the upper division despite winning just two of their last six league outings, the Tigers are 9-5-4 overall and 6-4-2 in WCHA play after tying (1-1) and losing (7-4) to Minnesota Duluth at the World Arena last weekend. Only two points out of first place, they currently are ranked No. 9 and 10 in the two national polls. Minnesota is No. 2 in both.

This weekend's series in Minneapolis will feature four of the WCHA’s top 11 point producers. Colorado College’s Chad Rau (10g,14a) and Eric Walsky (9g,13a) rank second and in a tie for third, respectively, with 24 and 22 points overall, while Gopher standouts Ryan Stoa (11g,9a) and Jordan Schroeder (7g,12a) are eighth and tied for 10th with 20 and 19.

Colorado College will have to wait at least another day to snap out of its offensive slump.

Not even Richard Bachman could rescue punchless CC in Friday’s series opener with the University of North Dakota, as the Fighting Sioux woke up from their early-season doldrums to claim a 3-1 victory at the World Arena.

The final stats say that the No. 1-ranked Tigers finished with a 30-29 edge in shots on goal. But the real story is that 37 more of their attempts sailed harmlessly wide or were blocked by the UND defense in front of freshman goaltender Brad Eidsness, who needed to make only a handful of quality saves.

Eidsness lost his shutout with 1:27 left to play, when Tyler Johnson’s wrist shot from the high slot changed direction after glancing off the arm of Bill Sweatt as the speedy Sweatt streaked toward the net.

North Dakota, meanwhile, got goals from Brent Davidson and Brett Hextall just 14 seconds apart midway through the second period to take command in a game that never seemed in doubt for the visitors.

Darcy Zajac’s tally at 9:53 of opening period staked the Sioux to an early lead, and CC just never found the groove while suffering its first defeat of the season.

The Tigers went 0-for-8 on the power play, including four straight chances early in the third period. They even had a 5-on-3 advantage for 1:24 when Zajac and Hextall were whistled for infractions within 36 seconds of each other.

A bright spot? Colorado College, now 5-1-3 overall and 3-1-1 in WCHA play, continued its shorthanded success by killing all four UND power plays in the game.

North Dakota, 3-4 overall, improved to 3-2 in league play heading into Saturday’s rematch.

I just realized I forgot to post the new polls this week, must have had something to do with that stupid event that took place Tuesday night. Anyway, the Tigers remained at numero uno again across the board, thanks to Bachman's NHL level performances. (polls will follow post) The biggest annoyance I have right now is that USCHO and INCH don't have current photos of the Tigers' players and it drives me freaking insane! The INCH Player of the week pic (oh yea, did I mention Bachman got that?!) is him in the early parts of last season with the gold pads (sent him the wrong color) and the basic black helmet. GET A CURRENT PHOTO!! I think that takes away a huge chunk of credibility to a site if they aren't willing to take the time to get a current pic.

An interesting traffic note: I compared my traffic from this site to the old one and the supportcctigers.blogspot.com site is still generating a ginormous amount of traffic and it's old! Nothing is current and no one seems to be clicking through, it's odd. So anyway, this site IS what was formerly supportcctigers.blogspot.com. I just wanted a new domain so I jumped over. So please bookmark this address and let your friends know.

I'm still working on the ugly blug links, it's a glitch somewhere hidden in my code that I can't seem to find. If anyone knows how to fix it please let me know. (it's all configured in the color and font settings to be yellow and grey so it's a hidden problem).

The Tigers' opponent this week is the once mighty North Dakota Fighting Sioux. The Sioux are currently 2-4 (2-2WCHA) and are coming off a 5-2 loss to Wisconsin. Judging from the lack of posts on Goon's Sioux site, it's been a bad year already. I can't remember the last time the Sioux weren't in the top 10, let alone unranked! Doesn't mean it won't be a tough series, but the Tigers need to sweep North Dakota for points and because, at least in terms of current records, the Sioux are apparently a "should win" series. The biggest key is to get some points and avoid injuries...oh yea and score!

Speaking of scoring, am I the only one who is getting annoyed with the Tigers' perimeter power play attack? They pass on the outside too much and don't generate good chances. Opposing teams crash the net and make fans hold their breath as Bachman plays superman while getting pummeled with shots. The Tigers have the talent to score more but aren't, and I have a feeling a shift in stragety may help. That's my 2 cents.

Allowing more than 40 shots on goal for the third consecutive game, Colorado College again placed its fate in the hands and pads of Richard Bachman on Sunday.

This time, however, the No. 1-ranked Tigers generated enough offense to reward their sophomore netminder with a victory while improving to 5-0-3 for the season.

Scott McCulloch, Andreas Vlassopoulos and Ryan Lowery each scored a goal, while Bachman finished with 40 saves, leading CC to a 3-2 triumph over the University of Denver at a sold-out World Arena.

Bachman’s best and biggest stop came in the closing minutes, when he made a spectacular glove save to rob DU defenseman Patrick Wiercioch from point-blank range in the low slot.

Lowery’s tally, a wrist shot from the left faceoff circle after the sophomore defenseman took a nice feed from freshman winger Nick Dineen, gave the Tigers a 3-1 lead at 13:53 of the second period and proved to be the game winner.

Vlassopoulos set up a power-play goal by McCulloch at 6:40 of the opening period, then struck for a red lighter of his own with 41.6 seconds left in the frame to put CC up 2-0 after 20 minutes.

The fourth-ranked Pioneers, who finished with a 42-20 shots-on-goal advantage for the night, finally broke through Bachman’s armor seven minutes into the middle stanza when Tyler Bozak pounced on a rebound just to the left of the crease and found a small opening on the goalie’s stick side.

Lowery restored Colorado College’s two-goal lead a little less than seven minutes later, with fourth-line winger Matt Overman also earning an assist.

That’s the way it stayed until the 14:44 mark of the third period. After failing to cash in on its first nine power plays of the contest, DU capitalized on its final chance of the night as Tyler Ruegsegger pulled the visitors back to within a goal. Wiercioch and Patrick Mullen combined to set up Ruegsegger. The assist was Mullen’s second of the game and 10th of the season.

The Tigers, now 3-0-1 in league play, moved ahead of Denver and into second place all alone in the WCHA standings heading into next week’s two-game series at home against the University of North Dakota. The Pioneers, 4-2-1 overall and 2-1-1 in WCHA play, dropped into a tie for third place with the University of Alaska Anchorage.

So I was traveling for the first part of the weekend and couldn't post anything from the tie Friday night, but I did watch most of it. It was pretty obvious after five minutes that both teams are very very good, which should provide us with a great rivalry this season. Bachman made 44 freaking saves, he's still got it. I caught a couple of mistakes in the telecast and the paper Saturday. FSN's wanna-be rinkside reporter asked one of our players (I forgot who now) how the series is different this season because of the change to home and home....ummm as long as I can remember that's the way it's been. The only difference this season is they don't play consecutive nights. Second error, the Gayzette tabbed tonight's game as the series' finale. Ummmm, we play DU twice more this season, not how I would define "series' finale", I know they were trying to sound dramatic, but that's stupid.
So tonight the Tigers take on DU(D) at the World Arena on ESPNU with a (hopefully) big national audience. Although I really want the Tigers to win, what I want more is an intense, high-speed, high-skill game to showcase our teams and the WCHA to the rest of the country who never gets a chance to watch us!
Speaking of rivalries, the reason why I want it to be a great game is because when one team has a down cycle, it's not so much a rivalry. For example, my Huskers got stomped by Oklahoma last night because OU is amazing and Callahan ruined our program so we are still rebuilding. Getting blown out 62-28 isn't fun, but when OU was in their down time, NU stomped 'em 69-7 in 1997 and 73-21 the year before. That's just how it goes. But anything is better than being a cu fan, what a joke!!

As if this weekend's games against DU(D) didn't need any more hype, the Tigers held on to their #1 ranking in all the rankings, despite only picking up two ties this weekend. The Pios dropped to #4 after getting a buckeye stuck in their throat Saturday night.

If you've been reading this blog regularly, you probably noticed that the content has gone down a bit the past two weeks. No I haven't gotten lazy, I just happened to move across the state and am still getting situatd no desk, furniture or internet at my place and working 10 hrs a day, 4 days a week kind of puts a damper on work on the blog. I know you're concerned (insert sarcasm here), but the blog is in no danger of dying, it's just laying low for a bit while I get settled. Once the house is all set up the content will come storming back. So the DU(D) content will be a little light this time, but it will come back soon!
